Fish Species
Caught in some of world’s most unpolluted waters, Icelandic Fish has an international reputation for quality and taste. Toppfiskur specializes in export of cod and haddock, both to retailers in pre-packed consumer packing, and in bulk for further preparation, cooking and processing. The company has also produced catfish and redfish for specific customers.
Atlantic cod – Gadus morhua
Cod, common name for nearly 60 species of a family of valuable food fishes. Cod live chiefly in cold or temperate northern seas, at depths of 180 to 360 m (600 to 1200ft), and undertake long migrations. Many live near the bottom. The Atlantic cod is generally moderate in size but can weigh as much as 90 kg (200 lb) and be as long as 1.8 m (6 ft). Greenish-gray to blackish-brown and sometimes red, it has a marbled pattern on its head, back, and sides. It is a voracious predator, eating herring, sand eel, and other shoal fishes. Codare valued both as food and as the source of cod-liver oil.
Haddock – Melanogrammus aeglefinus
Haddock, bottom-feeding marine fish of the cod family, differing from the cod in its smaller mouth, longer anterior dorsal fin, and the black line that runs along its side. It is usually about 60 cm (about 24 in) long and has a brown back and silvery underside; a black spot is located on each side behind the gills. The haddock travels in large schools and is abundant in the North Atlantic Ocean from Iceland to Cape Hatteras. It feeds mainly on small invertebrates. It is frequently sold smoked (under the name finnan haddie) or dried.
Catfish – Anarhichas lupus
Catfish is a member of the Anarhichas family and feeds mainly on shellfish. It can get as big as 20kg and can stretch to 150 cm. The fish it self is very tasty.Little is known about the biology of this species.
Red fish – Sebastes marinus
Red fish, common name for several closely related live-bearing fishes belonging to the scorpionfish family. Species known as ocean perch include the Acadian redfish, the deepwater redfish, the Norway redfish, and the golden redfish.
